There's no way they couldn't have known that salt mine was there.. It's all recorded in city maps.. they'd have to know about this.. What a strange situation, though. So funny, pillaging two resources from the earth, in the same place at the same time, caused them to lose all of it.

A disaster of even greater magnitude is happening right now in East Java, Indonesia. Again because of drilling. Dumb fucks drilled into a mountain (volcano) releasing a bazzilion tons of hot mud which has been swallowing the surrounding countryside for 3 years now and shows no sign of stopping.

Thats why you dont fuck with mother nature.how come engineers are sposed to be intellegant but theve got no common sense.
TruthSurge (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
I believe this was dumbness squared. 1) Drilling over a mine or cave-like structure W/O knowing it (should have used sonar or something to test first2) Drilling in a lake OVER said cave-like structureIt's like all these radioactive storage bins underground. Sweet. when one breaks... don't cry over the two-headed kids being born. :)

It is dumb, but only because the people who were drilling ought to have checked if there were hazards beneath; clearly that didn't happen here. After all, the diameter of the drill bit was only 14", the odds of drilling into a mine are pretty astronomical. This is an ecological disaster; these seem pretty common these days, like the Great Pacific Landfill for example.

Pretty dumb. Who thinks you can carve out a big hole under the ground and expect it to stay a hole with a huge lake on top? Humans screwing up the planet with no forethought...
